Shelby Campbell's Almost Famous Restaurant

Shelby Campbell's Almost Famous Restaurant is the quintessential choice for a relaxed business lunch. The Elk Grove hot spot is located off the lobby on the north side of the Holiday Inn Hotel at 1000 Busse Road.

Owned by Stephen L. Schwartz of First Hospitality Group, the restaurant got its name from the creative minds of Stephen Schwartz, Robert Habeeb, COO of the company, and other members of the FHG staff. With a successful first year and a welcoming staff, the restaurant hopes to add additional customers to its list of faithful regulars with a new menu and plenty of sports-related entertainment.

The "Almost Famous" part of the restaurant's name comes from the exploits of Shelby Campbell, which are chronicled on the walls of the restaurant in a series of whimsical pictures. "Shelby Campbell is a character who tried several different things that made him 'almost famous,' like running for president and writing a screenplay," says Dave Heller, Shelby Campbell's general manager. "He failed at everything until he went into the restaurant business."

Part of Shelby's new-found success comes from his menu, which was created by Executive Chef Carolyn Stec, and specializes in burgers, pizzas, and large appetizers, in addition to house specialties such as steaks and sandwiches. "Our customers really enjoy our appetizers, such as our American nachos and chicken quesadillas, because they give you a lot of food for a reasonable price," says Heller. Other popular menu items include the Cobb salad, fish tacos, pulled pork sandwiches, several varieties of wraps, and the Grown-Up Mac and Cheese.

Shelby Campbell's also owes some of its success to its convenient location in Elk Grove Village's industrial park. "We're one of the few places in the industrial park where the employees of local businesses can have a nice sit-down meal, and be in and out, in most cases, under an hour," says Heller. The restaurant, which seats 350, also boasts a full bar with over 30 draft beers, a private dining area which can be reserved for parties, an outdoor patio, and over 20 high-definition satellite televisions throughout the restaurant, which feature all of the sports channels.

Shelby Campbell's also prides itself on its experienced and friendly staff. "At the height of lunch rush, our staff serves about 200 people in an hour," says Heller. "At the same time, they remember everyone's name and treat everyone like regulars, even if they're not. They're the real reason our customers keep coming back."
